What Should We Expect from 'Batman v Superman's Second Weekend?

Saturday AM Update: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice takes a massive tumble compared to its opening day last weekend with an estimated $15.35 million Friday. That's an 81% drop from its opening day last Friday, which did include $27.7 million from Thursday previews, but even excluding those numbers you're looking at a 71.5% drop. Rival studios peg the film's second weekend dropping as much as 70%, resulting in a three day weekend around $50 million.

'Batman v Superman' Dominates the Box Office, Opening With $420 Million Worldwide

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ruled the box office this weekend, both in international and domestic markets, bringing home $420 million worldwide. The record-breaking performance saw the film set a new domestic March opening weekend record and it also serves as the largest domestic opening for Warner Bros. ever. And while the clash of superhero titans was doing its thing, Universal's counter-programming release in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 also performed well as did Roadside's Hello, My Name is Doris and Bleecker Street's Eye in the Sky.

'Batman v Superman'... Dawn of a New March Opening Weekend Record?

Saturday AM Update #2: Batman v Superman pulled in an estimated $67.2 million internationally on Friday for a total international cume of $115.3 million and global cume just shy of $200 million. The international total includes a $20 million opening day in China, the largest ever for a Warner Bros film; $9 million in the UK; $2.54 million in India; and $1.2 million in Japan. Additional international estimates will be available tomorrow morning, with actuals rolling in over the course of the day on Monday.

'Allegiant' Opens Short of $30M, 'Zootopia' Tops $200M and 'Bronze' Bombs

It's another #1 finish for Disney's Zootopia as the animated hit crossed $200 million this weekend, topping all newcomers. Coming in second was The Divergent Series: Allegiant, with an opening that was down over 44% from its predecessor, and in third was Sony's latest faith-based feature, Miracles from Heaven, which over-performed the studio's conservative expectations. In all, the top twelve was down just a hair compared to the same weekend last year with a combined gross of $119 million, of which Zootopia accounted for nearly 32%.

'Allegiant' Opens With $11.9M Friday; 'Zootopia' Will Repeat at #1

Saturday AM Update: The Divergent Series: Allegiant took the #1 spot on Friday with an estimated $11.9 million to go along with a "B" CinemaScore. This will result in a weekend around $28-31 million weekend for the third film in the Divergent franchise, which kicked off its theatrical run with $2.35 million from Thursday night preview screenings.

Ford & Spielberg Return for 'Indiana Jones 5' in 2019

Walt Disney Pictures has announced Harrison Ford will return to the big screen as Indiana Jones for a fifth Indiana Jones adventure, set for a July 19, 2019 release. Along with Ford, Steven Spielberg will be directing the as-yet Untitled Indiana Jones film with franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall producing.

'10 Cloverfield Lane' Tops Newcomers While 'Zootopia' Crosses $400 Million Worldwide

Disney's Zootopia dominated once again this weekend, bringing in an estimated $50 million in its sophomore session, pushing the film over $140 million domestically in its first ten days of release. Leading the weekend's four new wide releases is 10 Cloverfield Lane with a strong opening weekend performance while The Perfect Match, The Young Messiah and The Brothers Grimsby settled in slots six through eight in the weekend top ten.

Saturday AM Update: Zootopia will top the box office yet again after taking in an estimated $12 million on its second Friday, pushing it over the $100 million mark in eight days of release and heading toward a $48-50 million weekend. As for the newcomers, coming in second will be 10 Cloverfield Lane, which brought in an estimated $9 million on Friday (including $1.8 million from Thursday previews), which would put it on track for a three-day total around $24-25 million, similar to that of M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit last year, which opened with $25.4 million after a $9.2 million Friday. Like The Visit, 10 Cloverfield Lane also scored a "B-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

'Zootopia' Scores Disney Animation's Largest Opening Ever

Audiences flocked to see Disney's Zootopia as it scored Walt Disney Animation Studios' largest three-day opening ever. Meanwhile the weekend's other two new wide releases, London Has Fallen and Tina Fey's war comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, took second and fourth position respectively while Deadpool reached a milestone achievement.

Saturday AM Update: Zootopia topped the Friday box office with an estimated $19.4 million and an "A" CinemaScore with rival studios projecting a three-day weekend anywhere from $70-78 million. As was pointed out in the weekend preview below, Zootopia will need to pass $70.2 million to top The Lorax for the largest opening weekend for an animated film in March. That said, if it can manage to beat even rival estimates and score larger than $79.1 million it will have the third highest opening weekend in March, topping 2013's Oz the Great and Powerful.

The 'Gods of Egypt' are No Match for 'Deadpool', Which Climbs to $285+ Million Domestically

It was another stellar weekend for Deadpool as the R-rated superhero feature dropped only 44.2% and is now the third highest grossing R-rated movie of all-time. Meanwhile, Gods of Egypt conjured a second place finish while Triple 9 and Eddie the Eagle battling for fifth place with single-digit openings.

With an estimated $8.9 million on Friday it is looking to clear north of $30 million for the weekend for a drop somewhere around 42%. An amazing result as it will have likely topped $285 million domestically by Sunday evening. As for the newcomers, well, it isn't a pretty picture.

Deadpool took #1 at the weekend box office once again in its second weekend of release, crossing $235 million domestically. But it wasn't a weekend all about the Merc with the Mouth as a pair of newcomers in Risen and The Witch had strong opening performances. Additionally, Focus' Race finished its debut sprint with a sixth place finish and Sony saw an impressive limited opening for Stephen Chow's Chinese box office behemoth The Mermaid.

'Deadpool' Blows Away Competition with $150 Million, Four-Day Opening

President's Day weekend estimates are in and Deadpool is topping the charts with a massive $150 million to go along with an updated international three-day weekend of $132.1 million. Fox has revised its three-day estimate for the R-rated superhero feature to $132.7 million, which gives the film a whopping $264.8 million worldwide debut as of Sunday.

SATURDAY UPDATE: Deadpool brought in an estimated $47.5 million on Friday and an "A" CinemaScore. That's the largest Friday ever in February, besting Fifty Shades of Grey's $30.2 million Friday last year by a whopping $17.3 million. Projections now have the film opening with $110-116 million for the three-day weekend and possibly as much as $130 million for the four-day, both of which would obviously be records. Warner Bros. has adjusted their release schedule following Disney's decision a few weeks ago to move Star Wars: Episode VIII from May 26, 2017 to December 15, 2017. The move put the next episode in the Star Wars saga directly opposite Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ernest Cline's Ready Player One, which left WB no choice but to search for a new date. As it turns out, they decided March 2018 would pretty much be all theirs.

Kung Fu Panda 3 topped Super Bowl weekend, finishing #1 for a second weekend in a row while the weekend's three newcomers didn't exactly inspire upon release. The Coens' Hail, Caesar! performed as expected, though that isn't saying much, while The Choice ended up topping Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which couldn't even reach $6 million.
