'Star Wars: Force Awakens' First Ever to Cross $900 Million Domestically

With an estimated $1.76 million yesterday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the only film to cross $900 million domestically and it has achieved that milestone in only fifty days. In addition to this watershed moment, by the end of today, Saturday, February 6, Star Wars is expected to become only the third film in history to cross the $2 billion mark worldwide and it will have done so in only 53 days. Considering how quickly Force Awakens has achieved these accomplishments, putting them into any kind of comparable context is nearly impossible.

Super Bowl Weekend Preview: 'Panda 3' Over 'Hail, Caesar!', 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' & 'The Choice'

SATURDAY MORNING UPDATE: Hail, Caesar! leads the newcomers with an estimated $4.3 million on Friday as it's heading toward a weekend around $11.5 million. However, a "C-" CinemaScore doesn't bode well for its future prospects.

'Kung Fu Panda 3' #1; Holdovers Make Up for Money Lost in the Snow

Kung Fu Panda 3 reigns atop the weekend box office, bringing in more than enough to become the largest January animated opening of all-time. Meanwhile, fellow newcomers The Finest Hours, Fifty Shades of Black and Jane Got a Gun didn't fair so well as holdovers from last weekend make up for dollars lost due to last weekend's snowstorm. Not a single film in the top ten dropped more than 34% and the overall top twelve was up nearly 25% compared to last weekend, which is also a 46% improvement over the same weekend last year.

Weekend Preview: 'Kung Fu Panda 3' To Top 'Fifty Shades of Black' and 'Finest Hours'

Saturday Update: Friday estimates are in and Kung Fu Panda 3 is off to a soft start with an estimated $10.5 million to go along with an "A" CinemaScore. Rival studios are predicting a three-day weekend anywhere from $37.6-41 million, well below Mojo predictions, but within the industry expected range. For the sake of comparison, the original Hotel Transylvania kicked off its opening with $10.9 million and went on to bring in $42.5 million for its opening while Over the Hedge started its Friday off in 2006 with $10.7 million and finished the weekend with $38.4 million. The average opening weekend for a PG-rated animated film opening in the $9.5-11.5 million range is $37.2 million.

'The Revenant' Weathers Snow Storm While Weekend's Newcomers Perform as Expected

With a blizzard blanketing the East Coast, the weekend's box office was down 29.8% compared to last year. How much of that percentage should be attributed to the snowstorm and how much is due to the fact American Sniper was tearing up the box office last year is difficult to decipher. In all, the snow's effect was certainly noticeable when looking at the weekend's top two recent holdovers as The Revenant scored the top spot despite coming up a bit short of expectations while Ride Along 2 suffered a massive second weekend drop. 'Revenant' Hunts #1 Amid Newcomers, '5th Wave', 'The Boy' and 'Dirty Grandpa'

FRIDAY UPDATE: Dirty Grandpa brought in an estimated $660,000 from 2,000+ theaters during Thursday night preview screenings. A recent, genre comparison would be Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's R-rated comedy Sisters, which brought in $769k in December before opening with $13.9 million.

'Ride Along 2' #1, 'Revenant' Holds Strong and 'Star Wars' Crosses $1 Billion Internationally

Ride Along 2 was unable to top its predecessor but an estimated $34 million is enough to top the weekend box office, followed closely by Fox's The Revenant, which dropped only 26% in its second weekend in wide release. Both films finished ahead of domestic box office king Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which fell to third in its fifth weekend in release while becoming only the fifth film to ever cross a major international milestone.

'Ride Along 2' and 'Revenant' Look to Remove 'Star Wars' from Its Perch

SATURDAY UPDATE: Ride Along 2's Friday estimates came in at $12 million, $2.4 million short of the original. Similarly, the film fell short of its predecessor's "A" CinemaScore, pulling in a "B+" from opening day audiences. Depending on your source, estimates for the four-day weekend range from $35-40 million, putting it anywhere from $8-13 million short of the original's impressive 2014 performance and possibly push the comedy sequel to second place for the weekend behind our next film.

'The Revenant' Storms the Box Office; 'Star Wars' Opens with $53M in China

The Revenant exploded this weekend as audiences showed up in droves to see Leonardo DiCaprio brave the elements in his quest for revenge. The strong Oscar contender expanded into 3,375 theaters and amassed an impressive $38 million taking second only to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which not only finished #1 domestically but started its China release strong. Meanwhile The Forest continues to prove there's a reliable audience willing to show up for low budget, PG-13 horror at the beginning of the year.

Update: 'Star Wars' Opens in China; 'Revenant' & 'The Forest' Make Domestic Bows

SATURDAY MORNING UPDATE: The Revenant is blowing the doors off the box office, bringing in an estimated $14.4 million on Friday (including $2.3M from Thursday night previews) with early estimates pegging the overall weekend around $38.5 million. While this crushes BoxOfficeMojo's weekend forecast, it won't likely be enough to take down Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is now estimated to bring in $40M+. It could, however, be a close race depending on word of mouth as The Revenant has scored a "B+" CinemaScore.

Otherwise, expectations were mostly met when it comes to fellow newcomers in Joy, Concussion and Point Break while The Hateful Eight performed quite well in its limited, 100 theater debut.

Christmas Forecast: 'Star Wars' Second Weekend Faces Five New Wide Releases

Once again Star Wars: The Force Awakens is poised to break even more box office records over Christmas weekend. However, after five days of record-breaking activity it's this holiday season's new wide, expanding and limited releases that could prove equally interesting. Four new films are releasing in 2,800+ theaters this weekend with Daddy's Home the widest release of the lot at 3,271 theaters. Looking back over the years this has been a prime weekend for new releases, begging the question as to whether Star Wars steals eyeballs or if it simply does its thing while the other titles play as they normally would.
