Disney Led the Charge in November as 2017 Looks to Close Strong
The year saw a lift from November box office grosses as this past month was only the third time ever November receipts totaled more than $1 billion, led by Disney and Marvel's release of Thor: Ragnarok, which delivered nearly 28% of the month's total. Heading into the November, 2017 was trailing 2016 by 5.3%, but coming out of it this year was 4.4% behind 2016 thanks to what was the third largest November ever and a 5.1% improvement over November last year.
'Coco' Threepeats, 'Disaster Artist' Soars and WB Tops $2 Billion
Disney and Pixar's Coco topped the weekend box office for the third week in a row. In fact, the only shake-up in the weekend top five compared to the last two weeks is to see A24's The Disaster Artist landing in fourth position as it expanded into 840 theaters this weekend following its strong limited bow last week. As for the weekend's only new wide release, Broad Green's release of Just Getting Started struggled to finish over $3 million, barely eking into the top ten.
'Coco' Strums Up Second Weekend at #1 While Limited Releases Make a Splash
Disney and Pixar's Coco led the post-Thanksgiving frame in what was a repeat of last weekend's top five thanks in large part to no new wide releases this weekend. That doesn't mean there isn't anything to discuss as A24 enjoyed a great weekend with Lady Bird continuing its strong play and the studio's much-talked about feature The Disaster Artist finished just outside the top ten in its limited bow from just 19 locations. Additionally, Fox Searchlight's The Shape of Water was the weekend's per theater champ after opening in just two locations.
'Coco' To Lead Post-Thanksgiving Weekend as Limited Releases Take the Stage
Following a strong opening last weekend, Disney and Pixar's Coco is looking at a second weekend atop the box office. In fact, with no new wide releases hitting the marketplace this weekend's top ten is looking a lot like last weekend's as the top five seems unlikely to change while a few expanding titles jockey for position in bottom five. There are, however, some choice limited releases beginning their roll-out this weekend including A24's much anticipated The Disaster Artist and Guillermo del Toro's Venice Film Festival winner The Shape of Water along with the 20th anniversary re-release of one of the highest grossing movies of all-time.
'Coco' Scores Another Strong Thanksgiving Debut for Disney
With a strong, five-day debut Disney and Pixar's Coco joined the ranks of the many successful films Disney has launched over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Receiving high marks from critics and audiences alike, the film finished atop the weekend box office and is looking at solid returns throughout the holiday season. Additionally, WB and DC Comics' Justice League and Lionsgate's Wonder played mostly as expected as the three films contributed to a healthy helping of receipts at the holiday box office, outperforming the Thanksgiving three-day last year by ~4% with the top twelve combining for over $180 million.
'Coco' Hopes to Add to Disney's Legacy at the Thanksgiving Box Office
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Coco has played well so far through the holidays thus far and brought in an estimated $18.6 million on Friday, pushing its domestic cume after three days to $40.7 million. 'Justice League' Stumbles in Domestic Debut as 'Wonder' Delivers Wondrous Results
Warner Bros. and DC Comics' Justice League struggled compared to expectations as it failed to top $100 million over the course of its three-day weekend. Meanwhile, it was Lionsgate's Wonder that captured audience attention, debuting with an excellent $27 million, topping Thor: Ragnarok for a second place finish, positioning itself well for the holiday weeks ahead. Additionally, A24's Lady Bird continued its impressive run in limited release as it makes way for a nationwide debut over Thanksgiving weekend.

Audiences gave the film a "B+" CinemaScore.
October 2017 Box Office Returned to the Year's Downward Trend
After September delivered record numbers, the month of October saw the 2017 box office return to its downward trend, delivering calendar grosses down 15.6% compared to last year, falling below $600 million for the first time in ten years. Perhaps most startling is that with 287 films in release, the average per film was just $1.9 million, making it the first time that average has ever fallen below $2.1 million for any individual month based on BoxOfficeMojo's records going back to 1982. That being said, the Fall movie season has since come to an end and overall the season showed a ~6% improvement compared to last year thanks in large part to the record setting release of WB's It back in September, which became the first Fall release to ever gross over $300 million domestically.
'Thor 3' Repeats While 'Daddy's Home 2' and 'Orient Express' Deliver Strong Debuts
Thor: Ragnarok delivered an expected #1 finish in its second weekend at the domestic box office, pushing the film's domestic total ahead of both the first and second Thor films after just ten days in release. However, just as much a story are the strong openings for a batch of newcomers, both wide and and limited, as Paramount's Daddy's Home 2 and Fox's Murder on the Orient Express both delivered ahead of expectations and Fox Searchlight's Three Billboards averaged $80,000 per theater over its limited bow. Meanwhile, A24's Lady Bird cracked the weekend top ten despite only playing in 37 theaters.
'Thor: Ragnarok' Set to Repeat as Newcomers Scrap for Seconds
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: It's looking to be a solid weekend at the box office with the top five outperforming Mojo's pre-weekend forecast starting with Thor: Ragnarok, which pulled in an estimated $18.2 million in its second Friday in release and is looking to drop a mere 50% in its second weekend with $61+ million. This will push the film's domestic cume over $215 million after ten days in release, besting both the domestic totals for the first two Thor releases.
'Thor: Ragnarok' Delivers $121M Domestic Opening Along with Record China Debut
Disney and Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok got the 2017 holiday movie season started in strong fashion, debuting with over $120 million as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to fill theaters. Additionally, STX's A Bad Moms Christmas brought in over $20 million for its five-day start, but it's the road ahead that will tell the full story as it hopes to play well into the holiday season. Overall, the top twelve delivered a combined $166 million, which is a massive improvement over last week but still falls short of the $183 million for the same weekend last year, which not only featured the $85 million debut of Doctor Strange, but openings for Trolls and Hacksaw Ridge.
'Thor: Ragnarok' Targets $100M+ Domestic Debut, Kicking Off the Holiday 2017 Season

Like the last eight films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film earned an "A" CinemaScore from opening day moviegoers.
'Jigsaw' Tops Weekend, 'Suburbicon' Flops & 'Thor 3' Hauls in $100M+ International Debut
Lionsgate's Jigsaw came in just a bit behind expectations, which some may attribute to the Netflix debut of the second season of "Stranger Things" on Friday or the seven year gap between films, but that isn't to say this is a poor debut. Elsewhere, however, Paramount's Suburbicon flopped while Universal's release of Thank You for Your Service didn't perform much better over the course of one of the worst weekends of the year so far, with the top twelve currently sitting below a combined $60 million, $18 million behind the same weekend last year. James Wan
'Jigsaw' Brings the 'Saw' Franchise Back to the Big Screen as 'Thor: Ragnarok' Debuts Overseas
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: After pulling in an estimated $7.1 million on Friday (including $1.6 million from Thursday previews), Lionsgate's Jigsaw is expected to finish with $15-16 million for the weekend. The film received a "B" CinemaScore, which is an improvement over the last Saw film seven years ago and matches the scores for Saw III, Saw IV and Saw VI. In fact, Saw II is the only film in the franchise to ever score higher than a "B" with a "B+".
Tyler Perry's 'Boo 2!' Tops Weekend While Fellow Newcomers Struggle All Around
As expected, Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween topped the weekend box office becoming the seventh of eight Madea films to open over $20 million. Meanwhile, it was rough going for the weekend's four other new wide releases as Geostorm, Only the Brave and The Snowman essentially bombed while Pure Flix's Same Kind of Different as Me failed to meet the low end of expectations after strong group sales on opening day. Overall, the top twelve generated just $81.3 million, over $30 million less than the same weekend last year as October is currently pacing ~13% behind last year. Tyler Perry

At the same time, Blade Runner 2049 dropped over 50% in its second weekend, STX's The Foreigner topped Mojo's weekend forecast, Open Road's Marshall delivered on expectations and Annapurna's Professor Marston and the Wonder Women crashed and burned.

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Universal and Blumhouse's Happy Death Day delivered big business on Friday, bringing in an estimated $11.6 million, heading toward an opening around $26 million and an easy #1 finish.
WB and New Line's 'It' Propels September 2017 to Record Heights
September 2017 saw record returns with calendar grosses topping $695 million, falling just shy of becoming the first September to ever total $700 million at the domestic box office. Leading the way was Warner Bros. and New Line's massive hit It, which delivered record numbers of its own and accounted for a massive 41.2% of the month's total gross. September is also the first month since April to show an improvement over the same month in 2016, with September grosses finishing 18.3% higher than 2016.
