Sony's 'Jumanji' Dominates January 2018 Box Office
Despite there being a new Star Wars film in theaters, this past January saw Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle lead the way, playing a huge role in the month finishing just ahead of last January despite there being 28 fewer films in theaters. Sony also led all distributors with over $200 million in grosses followed closely by Fox, which saw continued success from a pair of Oscar nominees in The Post and the continued strong performance of The Greatest Showman, which is currently working on a 17x multiplier since its late December release.

The weekend delivered mostly on expectations with the week's three new wide releases taking the top three spots at the box office. Leading the way was Universal's Fifty Shades Freed, pushing the Fifty Shades franchise over $1 billion globally. Sony's release of Peter Rabbit actually topped expectations while Clint Eastwood's The 15:17 to Paris was a little late arriving in the station, coming up a bit short of Mojo's pre-weekend forecast.

Despite a 25% decline compared to the opening for its predecessor, Fox's Maze Runner: The Death Cure still managed a #1 finish at the weekend box office. Meanwhile, Entertainment Studios saw Hostiles deliver a solid performance as it expanded nationwide, Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Greatest Showman continue to hold strong, The Shape of Water expands with strong numbers on the heels of its 13 Oscar nominations and Viva's Padmaavat secures a spot in the top ten despite playing in just 324 theaters. All told, the weekend's top twelve was still down ~7% compared to last year as January has slowed to a crawl.

The weekend's new releases all outperformed expectations with both 12 Strong and Den of Thieves placing in the top three. However, neither was able to topple Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which topped the weekend box office for the third straight weekend and in the process passed Skyfall to become Sony's fifth-highest grossing film ever.

'Jumanji' Hangs On to #1 Spot Over MLK Weekend, Topping Four New Wide Releases
For a second weekend in a row Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle takes the weekend's top spot, this time holding off three new wide releases over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend as well as Fox's nationwide expansion of Steven Spielberg's The Post, which finished in the runner-up position. As for the weekend's three brand new releases, Lionsgate's The Commuter managed to exceed expectations while both Paddington 2 and Proud Mary fell a bit short. December 2017 Closes Out the Year with Record Grosses
The December box office delivered a record $1.323 billion in ticket sales, an 11% improvement over last year. The month was super-charged by the more than $517 million brought in by Disney's Star Wars: The Last Jedi as well as the performance of Sony's late year hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. As a result, what was a year-to-year deficit of -4.3% heading into December, 2017 finished down -2.7% when compared to 2016's record grosses becoming the third year in a row to finish with over $11 billion in ticket sales and the third highest grossing year at the box office ever.
'Jumanji' Tops the Weekend and $500M Worldwide as 'Insidious 4' Scares Up Strong Debut
Heading into the weekend Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ranked #7 on the list of movies that had never reached #1 at the weekend box office. After Friday's estimates the film ranked fourth on the list, but as of today it no longer occupies a position after a stellar third weekend saw the action comedy lead the way at the weekend box office while topping $500 million globally. Additionally, Universal's release of Blumhouse's Insidious: The Last Key finished with a strong second place debut and even outperformed the franchise's third installment as 2018 is officially underway and off to a solid start.
Look for 'The Last Jedi' to Become 2017's Highest Grossing Release Over New Year's Frame
The last two times New Year's Day fell on a Monday were 2000 and, most recently, 2006. Both instances saw films in the top ten show significant growth over the weekend prior. Similarly, if we were to look at the years 2001, 2007 and 2012, where New Year's Day fell on Tuesday, we again see strong performances though 2001 shows The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring dipping in its second weekend and 2012 shows The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey dropping in its third. Similar to this year's holiday leader, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, both of those films still topped the weekend box office, all of which aided in our attempt to make sense out of what to expect over this final weekend in 2017.
A Blizzard of New Releases are Hitting Theaters Over Christmas Weekend
SUNDAY AM UPDATE: With an estimated $68 million, Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Last Jedi remained at #1 for the second weekend in a row, doubling its closest competitor. The film, however, did drop 68% from its opening weekend, but that's not as much as a surprise as it may outwardly seem, particularly due to the lack of business over the weekend, especially on Christmas Eve, for all titles. The film is expected to top $100 million by end of day tomorrow, which is expected to be huge for most all films in release.
'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Delivers Second Largest Opening Ever
Star Wars: The Last Jedi delivered on expectations, debuting with the second largest opening weekend of all-time and propelling the box office to the third largest weekend ever based on estimates. In an attempt at counter-programming, Fox's Ferdinand got off to a bit of a slow start against the might of Star Wars as well as the continued strong performance of Pixar's Coco as it fell below Mojo's expectations, though the studio is optimistic when it comes to the film's future.
