'Blade Runner 2049' Struggles to $31.5 Million Opening Weekend
Warner Bros.'s release of Blade Runner 2049 isn't getting October off to the kind of start September saw one month ago. The dystopian sequel, arriving 35 years after the original, crash landed over its three-day opening, falling well below even the most modest of expectations. At the same time, Fox's The Mountain Between Us didn't exactly light the world on fire in its attempt at counter-programming, though it did top Mojo's pre-weekend forecast, while Lionsgate's release of My Little Pony squeaked over Mojo's meager expectations. Meanwhile, Focus's Victoria and Abdul expanded into moderate release and scored solid numbers, and A24's The Florida Project saw strong returns in its limited opening.
'Blade Runner 2049' Aims for $50M+ Opening, Hoping for Long Legs Throughout October
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: With an estimated $12.7 million on Friday (including $4 million from Thursday night previews), Blade Runner 2049 is looking to come in well below expectations, targeting an opening anywhere from $31-36 million.
Weekend #1 Up for Grabs as Record September at the Box Office Comes to an End
As a record September comes to an end, it's a race for number one with three films separated by a mere $310k. Based on estimates, it's a return to #1 for WB and New Line's It, but hot on its heels is Universal's American Made along with Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Otherwise, Sony's Flatliners debuted on life support, Novus's Til Death Do Us Part found its way into the top ten and Pure Flix's A Question of Faith finished on the outside looking in.
'American Made' and 'Flatliners' Target Spots in the Weekend Box Office Top Five
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Universal's American Made brought in an estimated $6 million on Friday and will be in a very close race for #1 at the weekend box office, not only with last weekend's #1 film, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, but with WB and New Line's It, all of which are looking to finish anywhere from $16.5-17 million for the weekend.
'Kingsman 2' Finishes #1 as September Grosses Near Record High
The weekend's new releases fell shy of Mojo's weekend forecast, but Kingsman: The Golden Circle still managed to debut larger than the original, finishing in the #1 spot. Unfortunately, The LEGO Ninjago Film fell well short of expectations as did Friend Request, which delivered a mere $2.4 million opening. There were, however, some bright spots among limited release titles as Battle of the Sexes and Victoria and Abdul delivered strong opening results as September's calendar grosses continue to pace toward record heights.
'Kingsman' and 'LEGO Ninjago' Ready to Add to September's Record Pace
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: The weekend's new releases aren't performing as expected. While Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle will take the top spot it will be touch and go to see if it can hit the $40 million mark after an estimated $15.3 million Friday. Right now it looks as if it's heading toward a three-day opening anywhere from $38-40 million. The film received a "B+" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.
Disappointing August 2017 Closed Out the Worst Summer Movie Season in Over 10 Years
As the September box office attempts to get 2017 back on track — the month is currently up 14% compared to last year — the chapter ends on what was a dismal August 2017 at the domestic box office. August was the fourth month in a row to show a decline compared to the previous year, all of which contributed to the worst Summer movie season in over ten years, in which the total summer gross failed to top $4 billion for the first time since 2006.
'It' Remains #1 with $60M Second Weekend, Floating to September Record
After just eight days in release, WB and New Line's It became the highest grossing September release of all-time, two days later it added another $40 million to that total for an impressive $60 million second weekend and nearly $220 million in just ten days. The horror film's performance vastly overshadowed the weekend's two new wide releases that saw Lionsgate and CBS Films's American Assassin deliver respectable results in second place while Paramount's release of Darren Aronofsky's mother! suffered greatly, finishing in third and receiving a disastrous "F" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.
'It' Set for $50M+ Second Weekend, Smothering 'Mother!' and 'American Assassin' Debuts
FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Lionsgate's release of CBS Films' American Assassin brought in $915,000 from Thursday night previews in 2,400 locations beginning at 7PM. This compares favorably to John Wick, which kicked off its run to a $14.4 million opening with $870k from Thursday screenings.

Summer 2017 Closes Out with the Worst Labor Day Weekend in 17 Years
Thanks to some stronger-than-expected performances, this weekend ended up better than Mojo's forecast and yet, this is still the worst three-day Labor Day weekend in twelve years. The top twelve grossed a combined $51.5 million and you have to go back to 2000, when the top twelve grossed a combined $47 million, to find a worse performance.
Sagging Summer 2017 Comes to an End with a Whimper
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: With an estimated $2.4 million, The Hitman's Bodyguard topped Friday's box office on its way to a third straight weekend at #1, looking to deliver nearly $9.5 million for the three-day and nearly $12 million for the four-day holiday. Annabelle: Creation falls into second place with $1.8 million on Friday, heading toward a $6.8 million three-day and the Weinstein's Wind River delivered an estimated $1.5 million on Friday and is looking at a three-day around $5.5-6 million.

Summer Staggers to a Close as Mayweather and McGregor Fight Takes Center Stage
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: At this point it's going to be close as to whether the top twelve can gross a combined $50 million, but it isn't looking promising. After an estimated $3.15 million on Friday it currently looks as if The Hitman's Bodyguard just might hit $10 million this weekend but we'll have to wait and see what kind of impact tonight's fight has on Hitman and the field.
'Hitman's Bodyguard' Tops Weekend with $21M+ Opening as 'Logan Lucky' Falls Short
Lionsgate and Summit's action-comedy The Hitman's Bodyguard finished ahead of pre-weekend expectations and took the #1 spot at the weekend box office while WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation scored a second place finish over its sophomore frame. The weekend wasn't too kind, however, to Bleecker's Logan Lucky, which did manage to finish third, but was unable to crack double digits from over 3,000 locations. As for the weekend overall, the top twelve narrowly escaped becoming the worst weekend of 2017 by less than $1 million by combining for $81.5 million. As of right now, this means the month of August is currently pacing 34% behind August last year while the summer season is pacing 12.8% behind last year. Channing TatumDaniel CraigChristopher Nolan
Summer Slows to a Crawl as 'Hitman's Bodyguard' and 'Logan Lucky' Debut
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: With an estimated $8 million, Lionsgate and Summit's The Hitman's Bodyguard topped Friday's box office and is looking to top the weekend with a $20+ million three-day opening. This puts it ahead of Annabelle: Creation's second Friday, which came in at an estimated $5 million, heading toward a three-day just a bit shy of $15 million.
'Annabelle' Sequel Shines as Summer 2017 Box Office Continues to Fade
It's a great weekend for Warner Bros. which saw Annabelle: Creation, the latest installment in the Conjuring franchise, top the box office with $35 million while Dunkirk topped $150 million domestically. However, fellow new releases struggled to give the box office much of a jolt as the top twelve brought in a combined $103.8 million, down 6% compared to last weekend and the fourth lowest weekend of 2017. Overall, the summer movie season is still down 12% compared to last year. Edgar Wright

SATURDAY AM UPDATE: WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation is off to an excellent start, bringing in an estimated $15 million on Friday (including $4 million from Thursday previews) on its way to a weekend around $35 million if not more. It's also great news for director David F. Sandberg who helmed last year's hit Lights Out for WB. That film went on to gross nearly $150 million worldwide on a budget under $5 million. The film received a "B" CinemaScore, matching the score for the first film.
July 2017 Box Office Marks Third Straight Month in Decline
After July 2015 and 2016 saw increases from one year to the next, July 2017 took a step back, down 12.2% compared to 2016 with calendar grosses reaching $1.2 billion from 221 films compared to $1.37 billion last July. Leading the way was Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming, which topped all releases bringing in $280 million in July, earning Sony the #1 spot for the month with six films grossing nearly $390 million. Overall, this marks the third month in a row to show a decline compared to 2016 with the summer movie season struggling and showing no sign of improvement in the month of August with the season currently pacing 11% behind 2016. Overall, 2017 is currently -2% compared to 2016 with August likely to become the sixth month out of the first eight to show a decline from one year to the next. Tom HardyMalcolm D. LeeWill Packer
