'Jurassic' Retains #1, 'Inside Out' Joyful

Jurassic World retained its #1 position at the weekend box office with a less-than-expected -51% decline for a $102M take. Inside Out outperformed even the most optimistic of estimates and banked $91M, making it Pixar's 2nd largest opening weekend, behind Toy Story 3, which made $110.3M in 2010.

Friday Report: 'Inside Out' 2nd Best but Beats 'Jurassic'

Disney is reporting that Pixar's Inside Out took in an estimated $34.2M at 3,946 locations Friday, becoming the second best Pixar opening day after Toy Story 3, which hauled in $41.1M nearly five years ago on June 18th, 2010.

'Inside Out' 'Jurassic' In

Pixar's Inside Out opens in a reported 3,946 venues tomorrow. With excellent reviews and the strong Pixar brand $71M for the three-day weekend seems quite possible. That figure is higher than some estimates, which are placing it around $60M. But, basing it upon an $18K per theater take, which is what Pete Docter's last Pixar feature, Up averaged on its 2009 opening, gets it to $71M handily.

'Jurassic''s World

[6/15/15: 11:41] - Universal is reporting that Jurassic World now holds the title of biggest domestic opening weekend of all time, grossing $208.8M at the box office, surpassing 2012's Marvel's The Avengers at $207.4M.

'Jurassic World' Indomitable, Rex Box Office

Doubling the original weekend estimate proffered by Universal Jurassic World is now coming in at a reported $204.6M ($204,596,380) for its opening weekend, the 2nd biggest of all time, taking a Fast Pass by this May's Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.2M) and almost catching Marvel's The Avengers ($207.4). 'Jurassic''s Thursday-saurus Rex

Jurassic World took in a terrific $18.5M in Thursday night showings in the U.S., which may mean that the original estimates of a $125M weekend for the fourth Jurassic film might be too conservative.

'Jurassic' Knocks It Outta the Park

Jurassic World outperformed even the most optimistic of forecasts with an $82.8M Friday, the third best Friday opening on record, with only Age of Ultron ($84.4M) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 ($91M) still ahead of it.

'Jurassic' Takes Over the World

Jurassic World opened with a strong $24.5M first day on Wednesday in China, France, and six other territories, presaging what looks to be a phenomenal opening weekend, both domestically and overseas. China accounted for $17M of that $24.5 total (with receipts from previews thrown in) and the film was #1 in all eight markets in 6,824 theaters.

Weekend Report - 'Spy' Eyes $30M Weekend

[UPDATED] Writer/director Paul Feig, Melissa McCarthy, and a cache of great, supporting actors helped pull the extremely funny and well-reviewed Spy ahead of its early challenger, Insidious 3, for a $30M win. That wasn't a sure thing as the third installment in the Insidious series, which ended up with $23M for the weekend, in 3,002 venues, took an early, if slight, Friday lead over Spy. That's not unusual as horror fans tend to show up early to support their films, so on Saturday, Insidious 3 was a nose ahead with $10.4M versus $10.3M for the secret agent spoof. But, coming around the Saturday bend, Spy surged ahead for a dominant, American Pharoah-like finish. Dwayne Johnson

Weekend Report - 'San Andreas' Rocks With $53M

[UPDATE] Dwayne Johnson proved he can open a tentpole film all by his not-so-little lonesome with San Andreas's estimated, beefy $54.6M domestic take. That $14K per theater average, in 3,777 venues, was much better than the predicted $40M for the Warner Bros. disaster flick. 44% of that was attributed to 3D and, with an A- CinemaScore, it looks like the film will have domestic box-office aftershocks for some weeks to come. But the U.S wasn't the only place that the tremors were felt. Overseas, in 60 markets, San Andreas ranked #1 in 55 of those markets, opening with an international cume of $60M (on 14.5k screens) resulting in a worldwide cume of $113.2M.Cameron Crowe

'Tomorrowland' Takes Sleepy Memorial Weekend

Opening in 3,972 locations Tomorrowland took in a lower than expected $40.7M just beating out Pitch Perfect 2 and its projected $37.9M in what proved to be a drowsy four-day Memorial weekend frame.

Weekend Report - 'Max' 'Pitch'-Slapped

Tom Hardy, George Miller, and Mad Max: Fury Road were run over by Anna Kendrick, Elizabeth Banks and the young harmonizers of Pitch Perfect 2 in a game of chicken between two sequels with equally passionate fan-bases.

Weekend Report - 'Ultron' Hot, 'Pursuit' Not

Avengers: Age of Ultron didn't plummet from the sky like that Sokovian fiefdom in the film but, with its $77.2 million 2nd week outing, it did drop 59.6% from its opening take of $191 million. Surprising amounts of Monday-morning quarterbacking this last week noted that Ultron could have become the new #1 film for all-time weekend box office if it hadn't been up against several sporting events that siphoned off eyeballs.
