'Martian' Holds Strong at #1, 'Pan' Flops & 'Steve Jobs' Big in Limited Release
It was a weekend of highs and lows, with the lows coming from the more-disappointing-than-expected opening weekend for Warner Bros' Pan. The Peter Pan origin story directed by Joe Wright was struggling to gain a foothold well before its opening weekend and opened even worse than even the most dire predictions expected. At the high end of the box office, however, The Martian enjoyed a strong second weekend and, in limited release, Universal appears to have another hit in the making with Steve Jobs.
Forecast: WB's 'Pan' Faces Stiff Competition and Low Expectations
Warner Bros' Pan is this week's new wide release. The film is a new telling of the Peter Pan origin story from director Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement), starring Hugh Jackman as the villainous Blackbeard and newcomer Levi Miller in the title role. A week ago it was reported the film's opening weekend was tracking as low as $21-22 million, worrisome numbers for a film said to be budgeted at $150 million, and I'm having a hard time going even that high with my predictions.
'The Martian' Opens With Strong $55 Million Weekend
The talk of The Martian breaking Gravity's October, opening weekend record began early and really spiked after the Ridley Scott film posted a better opening day than the 2013 Alfonso Cuaron sci-fi flick. However, estimates show The Martian coming up a shade shy of the $55.7 million October record. Provisioned with an "A" CinemaScore, though, this one should survive well week-to-week.
Forecast: Can 'The Martian' Top 'Gravity's October Record?
You're going to hear references to Gravity a lot this weekend. One critic says Robert Zemeckis' The Walk "does what Gravity did for outer space" while Ridley Scott's The Martian is not only an outer space-set drama, but could possibly challenge Gravity's October opening weekend record, which was set this same weekend two years ago. However, those Gravity references may be short-lived if neither film is able to live up to the success the seven-time Oscar winner found two years ago.
'Hotel Transylvania 2' Boasts New September Opening Record
The Drac Pack appears to be the new owner of the September box office as Hotel Transylvania 2 has followed in the footsteps of its 2012 predecessor and set a new September opening weekend record. In fact, it was a pretty good weekend all around for newcomers as Nancy Meyers has another solid opening on her hands, Eli Roth and BH Tilt scored good numbers with The Green Inferno and a selection of limited releases managed strong numbers on just a few screens. Overall the weekend was up 29.8% from last year, but when you're breaking records that will happen.
Forecast: 'Transylvania', 'Intern' & 'Inferno' Highlight Stacked Weekend
It's a stacked weekend with some notable holdovers and a pair of strong-performing limited releases from last weekend set to expand. Add to that a trio of newcomers including the latest from Nancy Meyers, an animated sequel and the curious decision from Jason Blum's newly formed BH Tilt to bring the long-delayed cannibal horror feature The Green Inferno to over 1,500 theaters. Let's peel this onion one layer at a time... Jason Blum
'Maze' and 'Mass' Top Box Office, but 'Everest' and 'Sicario' are the Story
The weekend box office is up from last year with the arrival of two new wide releases, the latest young adult adaptation, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, and the Johnny Depp-led Whitey Bulger story, Black Mass. However, the weekend's biggest news doesn't come with the wide releases. The true talking points come when we look at the limited, IMAX and premium large format release of Universal's Everest and the release of Sicario in only six theaters. But let's start at the top…
Forecast: Depp's Gangster Tale, a Young Adult 'Maze' and a Trip to 'Everest'
UPDATE: Warner Bros. is reporting Black Mass took in an estimated $1.4 million from preshows on Thursday night. The original forecast article follows.
'Perfect Guy' Takes Weekend #1 With Shyamalan's 'Visit' a Close Second
The weekend box office was bolstered by two strong openings for both new, major releases. The Screen Gems thriller, The Perfect Guy topped the box office with $26.7 million and M. Night Shyamalan's micro-budget thriller The Visit was a very close second with an estimated $25.6 million. Jason Blum
'Perfect Guy' Tops Friday Box Office, Shyamalan's 'Visit' Opens Strong Second
The Perfect Guy and The Visit will outperform predictions as both films got off to stellar starts this weekend. M. Night Shyamalan's Visit pulled in an estimated $9.2 million Friday, which included Thursday night early screenings, while Sony's Perfect Guy took the top spot with an estimated $9.95 million from 2,221 theaters.
Forecast: Shyamalan's 'Visit' and 'Perfect Guy' Challenge for Weekend #1
UPDATED: Predictions at the bottom of this post have been updated as final theater counts have arrived. The text of today's forecast article has not been edited and the early predictions are listed at the bottom of this article for comparison. Jason Blum
Weekend Report -'War Room' Walks to #1
Sony is reporting that War Room, their faith-based film from Affirm Films, dropped a slight 18% in its second week, taking in $9.3M for the three-day domestic box office and the #1 spot on the charts. As far as the opening films, A Walk in the Woods, with $8.2M, ambled past the sputtering The Transporter Refueled, which made $7.2M.
Friday Report: 'Transporter' and 'Walk' Unlikely to Refuel Labor Day Weekend
Labor Day weekend 2015 is looking a bit peaked, that is if you're looking for big numbers from either of this weekend's new releases—The Transporter Refueled or A Walk in the Woods. The film getting the wider release of the two is the Transporter reboot, which sees Ed Skrein stepping into Jason Statham's shoes. Statham last played the character in 2008's Transporter 3, which opened with $12 million, the second highest opening within the original Transporter franchise.
Weekend Report -'Compton' Wins 'War Room' Rumble
Despite what President Merkin Muffley said in Dr. Strangelove it appears you CAN fight in the War Room. Straight Outta Compton did just that and, with $13.2M in domestic box office, emerged victorious over War Room to claim the #1 position on the charts for the third weekend in a row. War Room, which beat Compton in theaters on Friday, made $11M with a robust $9,692 per screen average. Alex Kendrick
Friday Report: 'Compton' Three-peats
Forecast Update: Looks like that headline, "'Compton' Three-peats," should have had a question mark behind it. Sony is reporting that War Room, the faith-based film from the Kendrick brothers, made $3.87M in Friday receipts while Universal reports that Straight Outta Compton made $3.83M. Weekend Report -'Compton' Tops the Charts Again
Straight Outta Compton fell 56% in its second weekend but still managed to take first place on the box office charts with $26.8M. It's Universal's 13th weekend with a film in the #1 position. Meanwhile the other new titles did little to turn around an August that can't compete with the record-breaking, $1B results of last year and the top 12 was down 10.46% from the same frame last year.
Friday Report: 'Compton' Hits, Others Miss
Universal will be adding 200 theaters to their hit Straight Outta Compton's current 2,757 venues, assuring that it takes the weekend with an estimated $30M. Given the N.W.A. biopic's current domestic haul of $84M that would put it well over $100M by Monday. The rest of the field, two secret agents flicks and horror sequel, can only look at that late August haul for Compton and drool.
Weekend Report -'Compton' Another Universal Smash
Monday Update: Universal is estimating that Straight Outta Compton made $60.2M (was $56M) in 2,757 theaters, a remarkable $21,835 (was $20,345) per screen average. Compton easily bested the other wide release, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which is under-performing with an estimated $13.5M. Ice CubeF. Gary GrayGuy Ritchie
Friday Report: 'Compton' Straight Up Hit
Universal's historic year just keeps on rolling with Straight Outta Compton, which grossed $4,957,000 at late night shows, on its way to a predicted $40M weekend. The well-reviewed bio-pic of the group N.W.A., the ground-breaking rap artists that was fronted by Ice Cube and included now-billionaire and impresario Dr. Dre and the late Easy-E, was in 2,264 theaters. It adds another 493 for a final weekend screen count of 2,757. F. Gary GrayGuy Ritchie
Weekend Report - 'Fantastic Four' Gets Clobbered
Fox's Fantastic Four got a Thing-like pummeling at the box office with a $26.2M first outing, allowing Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation to take #1 for the second weekend in a row with $29.4M.
