Wanna-be Rope

What is interesting about Murder by Numbers is that it makes no secret about who commits the murder. The suspense is created, not by finding out who did it, but how they did it and why.

'Changing Lanes' Takes Right Turn at the Box Office

With the mounting tension of the April 15 tax deadline, more people chose to blow off steam by watching Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Affleck go at it in the road rage drama Changing Lanes than by seeing Cameron Diaz shake her Sweetest Thing during the weekend ending April 14.Changing Lanes cut off the competition with $17.1 million from 2,613 theaters, 70% of its audience older than 25. Props must go to the Paramount marketing department, which saw similar success with last April's Along Came a Spider ($16.7 million opening). Once again the studio proved it's the master at launching thrillers, even when they're not quite thrillers such as Changing Lanes. Though the ad campaign got to a cold start, it hit full bore just a couple of days before the Friday release with non-stop commercials that featured more punch and a clearer sense of what the movie was about than previous ones. Rave reviews only added to the momentum. Jodie FosterAshley JuddMorgan FreemanJames CameronSam RaimiDwayne JohnsonSandra Bullock

'Changing Lanes,' 'Sweetest Thing' Try to Ease Sour Taste of Tax-Paying

As the tax deadline draws near, will moviegoers relieve the tension by watching Cameron Diaz shake her moneymaker in The Sweetest Thing or will they blow off some steam watching Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Affleck go at it in the road rage drama Changing Lanes? That's assuming, of course, they have enough money to pay the exorbitant ticket prices after Uncle Sam has taken his share of their income. Christina ApplegateJames CameronSam Raimi

'High Crimes' Toasted by 'Panic Room'

High Crimes opened in the #2 position this weekend, unable to beat out Jodi Foster in The Panic Room. This wasn't a surprise to Derby player Tony Smith in Mississippi who predicted that "Jodie Foster can take on Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman at the same time and still come out on top." In fact, 70% of players put Panic Room in the #1 slot. <TABLE style="BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" borderColor=#111111 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 align=right border=1> <TBODY> <TR> <TD align=middle bgColor=#dcdcdc>Rank</TD> <TD bgColor=#dcdcdc>Name, Location</TD> <TD align=middle bgColor=#dcdcdc>Accuracy</TD></TR> <TR> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f5f5f5>1</TD> <TD bgColor=#f5f5f5>Brandon Gray

'High Crimes' to Suffer 'Panic' Attack

After an extraordinarily busy March when each weekend had at least one movie making $20 million or more, the box office's blistering pace will slow down on this the first weekend of April due to three new releases exhibiting modest potential. Tough Weekend Creates 'Panic' Among Players

Brett Aurit of Minneapolis, MN summed up last week's Box Office Derby game when he said, "Four new major releases this week on top of 2 movies getting Oscar bumps... Predicting drops are easy, but rises and new releases are a pain." <TABLE style="BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" borderColor=#111111 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 align=right border=1> <TBODY> <TR> <TD align=middle bgColor=#dcdcdc>Rank</TD> <TD bgColor=#dcdcdc>Name</TD> <TD align=middle bgColor=#dcdcdc>Accuracy</TD></TR> <TR> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f5f5f5>1</TD> <TD bgColor=#f5f5f5>Jason Kaplan</TD> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f5f5f5>80.40 %</TD></TR> <TR> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f4f4ff>2</TD> <TD bgColor=#f4f4ff>JMPster</TD> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f4f4ff>79.42 %</TD></TR> <TR> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f5f5f5>3</TD> <TD bgColor=#f5f5f5>Paul Taing</TD> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f5f5f5>78.97 %</TD></TR> <TR> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f4f4ff>4</TD> <TD bgColor=#f4f4ff>Jack Slater</TD> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f4f4ff>78.17 %</TD></TR> <TR> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f5f5f5>5</TD> <TD bgColor=#f5f5f5>kolchak2</TD> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f5f5f5>77.67 %</TD></TR> <TR> <TD align=middle bgColor=#f4f4ff>6</TD> <TD bgColor=#f4f4ff>Adam J. Friday Box Office

The Mexican maintained pole position on Friday, absconding with an estimated $3.65 million from 2,959 venues. It's on track to do about $12 million for the weekend.

Weekend Box Office

The Mexican corralled $20.1 million from 2,951 theaters to top the charts this weekend. The much anticipated pairing of Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt generated sparks, though not quite at the wattage their respective toothy and dimpled grins would suggest. The opening is shy of the unadjusted $24 million average that Roberts has enjoyed since her 1997 resurgence, though it's a career best for Pitt as a headliner. Chris RockKevin CostnerKurt Russell
