Around-the-World Roundup: 'Toy Story 3' Plays Strongly in Opening
Complementing its excellent domestic opening weekend, Toy Story 3 opened strongly in China and a handful of Latin American territories. The A-Team added countries to stay in the mix, while Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time continued to offset mediocre domestic grosses with lucrative foreign earnings.

Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 3 debuted in 25 percent of the international market, grossing $43.4 million in 25 territories. The animated sequel hit that height mostly through China and Latin America and without any major European territories. It broke the opening gross record for an animated title in Mexico ($15.6 million), China ($9.5 million) and Argentina ($2.6 million), and it set a new Pixar high in Brazil ($2.8 million). Disney reported that Up made $23.7 million from the same 25 countries last year, and Toy Story 3 will follow a similar staggered distribution strategy to the one that led Up to a sensational $438 million foreign total last year. Next weekend, Toy Story 3 will add eight new territories, including Australia and India.

After a soft opening last weekend, The A-Team added 13 territories for a total of 47, declining three percent to $13.97 million. The movie opened at number one in France ($3 million), Italy ($1.2 million), Thailand ($565,000), Belgium ($376,000), Norway ($255,000), and Switzerland ($154,000). Through its second weekend, The A-Team has rounded up $34.7 million overseas.

With no significant openings this weekend, Sex and the City 2 dipped 41 percent to $13.5 million from 7,000 screens in 58 markets. The comedy sequel held the number one spot for the fourth straight weekend in Germany, off just 13 percent to $1.6 million for a total of $20.4 million there. Through its fourth weekend, it has grossed $157.9 million.

Prince of Persia fell 48 percent to $10.2 million in its fifth weekend for a foreign total of $213.1 million. Late last week, the movie passed Lara Croft: Tomb Raider to become the highest grossing video game adaptation ever worldwide (domestic plus foreign) with $293.6 million.

Continuing its slow expansion, Shrek Forever After opened to $8 million in Australia, which was a huge chunk of its $9.3 million foreign weekend. Overall, Shrek 4 has grossed $85.6 million overseas for a worldwide total of $309 million.
