Friday Report: 'Megamind,' 'Due Date' Deliver
On Friday, all three new nationwide releases, Megamind, Due Date and For Colored Girls, posted solid numbers, cumulatively providing a high-grossing start to the holiday movie season. Overall business improved considerably over the same Friday last year when A Christmas Carol led in its debut.

Megamind drew an estimated $12.5 million on approximately 7,200 screens at 3,944 locations. While that was much less than the similarly-themed Despicable Me's $21.3 million first day, it was slightly higher than How to Train Your Dragon's $12.1 million.

Hot on Megamind's heels was Due Date with an estimated $12.2 million on around 4,700 screens at 3,355 locations. That was on the high end for an R-rated comedy, grossing much more than Role Models' $6.7 million on the same Friday in 2008, though it trailed The Hangover's $16.7 million. The disparity between Megamind and Due Date will grow in Megamind's favor as the weekend progresses.

For Colored Girls made an estimated $7.4 million on close to 2,900 screens at 2,127 locations, which was a nearly identical first day gross to Why Did I Get Married? and Diary of a Mad Black Woman (though it trailed those titles in attendance).

Halloween holdovers Saw 3D and Paranormal Activity 2 took typical hits. Saw 3D was down nearly three quarters, like most of its predecessors. It grossed an estimated $2.65 million for a $33.3 million tally in eight days, which was low for the series but better than Saw VI. Paranormal Activity 2 dove 60 percent to an estimated $2.35 million for a strong $72.3 million sum in 15 days.

Red and Secretariat again showed off their legs. Red was off 27 percent to an estimated $2.5 million for a $65.5 million total in 22 days. Secretariat eased 24 percent to an estimated $1.2 million for a $48.2 million purse in 29 days.

In limited release, 127 Hours reached a good altitude for only playing at four locations, grossing an estimated $77,000. Fair Game was modest by comparison with an estimated $180,000 at 46 locations.
