April 2010 Out-Grosses Past Aprils
April 2010 was the highest-grossing April of all time, generating $752 million. That was up eight percent over April 2009, which was the previous April record with over $695 million, but the average national ticket price jumped over eight percent year over year to $7.95. In terms of estimated attendance, April 2010 wouldn't even crack the Top Ten Aprils.
April business was spread out far more than March, which was dominated by one movie (Alice in Wonderland). Clash of the Titans (2010) was the top-grossing title, pulling in $149.7 million. It was followed by March holdover How to Train Your Dragon, which drew $126.2 million. The 3D ticket price premium of those two titles alone appears to have accounted for nearly $50 million of the April total.
Date Night was a distant third in April with $68.5 million, followed by Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? with $58.2 million. The Last Song, which opened the last day of March, rounded out the Top Five with $51.9 million.
The Spring movie season as a whole, which is defined as the first Friday in March through the Thursday before the first Friday in May, will come in at another all time high: $1.64 billion. That's up nearly 28 percent over last year, but that Spring was a week shorter. Like April, though, that will also not be a record in terms of attendance.
With nearly $330 million, Alice in Wonderland was by far the biggest Spring release, and it boasted the greatest Spring market share on record, accounting for more than 20 percent of business. How to Train Your Dragon wound up in second for the season with nearly $195 million by Thursday, followed by Clash of the Titans with close to $156 million.
Year-to-date through April, 2010's tally was at a record clip, racking up $3.4 billion. Business was up nine percent over last year, which was the previous benchmark. Again, attendance wasn't at the same pace, but was relatively bustling nonetheless. Avatar's still the top-grossing picture of the year, grossing $463.2 million of its $747.4 million total from January to April.
