Having a Good Time (1913)

Johnson, after having worked at a small salary for many years, inherits a fortune. He joyously ventures forth in search of companionship and friends on whom to spend his money, first having given up the job he has grown to hate. Much to his discomfiture, everyone he meets is suffering from severe ailment which will not permit them to accompany him on his journey to hilarity. Disgusted, he leaves for home. On his way he stumbles and sprains his ankle; having sent for a doctor be goes to his room. The doctor on his way to visit Johnson, is met by the village gossip, who inquires his destination. Hearing that he is about to visit Johnson, and not being able to learn his ailment, she arrives at the conclusion that Johnson is dying. This report she spreads, with the result that all the would-be good fellows adjourn to the florist, where they gather a unique collection of funeral flowers. One after the other they visit Johnson, present him with the flowers, which drives him into distraction. In a moment of anger he dons his overcoat and hat and returns to ask for his job. The boss, thinking he is crazy, has him arrested. This affords his friends an opportunity for a great deal of unwanted sympathy, ending when the village boob brings his gift to the presumably dying man, a large wreath reading, "Rest in Peace."
