Bluebeard (1907)
Blue Beard, whose name comes from the color of his beard, which is quite blue, has already had seven wives, and he has killed them all, one after the other, and hanged them in dark closet in his castle. After he has married his eighth wife he wants to prove her curiosity, and for so doing he tells he that he is going away on long journey, and that will entrust her with key the secret room, forbidding her at the same time to enter it. No sooner has he departed than she goes and opens the room; but she is so terrified at the sight of the seven bodies that she drops the key, and this immediately gets stained, and the poor lady sees with dismay that the spot gets larger every time she rubs it. Blue Beard comes back and asks for the key, but on seeing that his wife has obeyed his order he becomes very angry, and tells her that she must die. He gives her only a quarter of an hour to make ready. After this short while has elapsed, he cries out: Will you come down, or I'll come up." And the poor lady, having sent for her brothers, asks her sister, who is watching for them, "Anne, Sister Anne, is there anybody coming?" No," comes the sad answer, I only see a flock of sheep the distance and a cloud of dust." At last her brothers arrive just in time to release her from her bad husband and his cutlass. Mrs. Blue Beard then takes the place of her husband as lady his manor, and her vassals come and take oath of allegiance her.
