Days of '49 (1910)

As Bob Canby struggled onward over the alkali desert with parched throat and stiffening limbs, he almost wished he had not left his partner, Jack Willoby, hors de combat, after a stunning blow on the head, and skipped oat with their combined gold. But he had no map of the mines, which turned out to be one of the wealthiest in the country; to retrace his steps would be useless. Six months passed and Mrs. Willoby, receiving no word from her husband, took their little daughter, Nona, and started in search of him. The trip, however, proved too much for their strength, and ere the prairie schooner had finished its journey she died. The child she placed in charge of Sheriff Johnson, and his good wife, having no children of their own, gladly welcomed the motherless little one. Willoby, unlike his young partner, had made a map of the mine, but when he revived his reason had flown, so for ten years he wandered aimlessly around, always closely guarding the sketch of his claim. It was in his usual aimless fashion, after a long tramp, that he fell exhausted on Sheriff Johnson's ranch, and Nona, riding up, had him carried into the house. Upon reviving. Nona's marked resemblance to her mother awakened his sleeping memory, and upon showing her a pouch she had worked for him and covering up his long beard and scraggly hair, the girl was able to recognize him as her father. Bob Canby, who had settled near the Johnsons, had that day proposed to Nona and had been refused. He was telling the Sheriff of his ill fortune, when Willoby caught sight of him and instantly recognized his former partner. Not so Canby, he needed the additional proof of the map of their mine, which Nona had let fall as she examined the pouch. However, she returned in time to prevent Canny from pocketing it, and with the Sheriff, locked it in the chest of drawers. Unseen, Canby had watched them from the door, and as soon as all but Willoby had left the house, he called in Hank Barton to assist him in obtaining the map. Barton had just lifted it from the drawer when Nona entered. Canby managed to evade her, but his accomplice she caught sight of as he ran into the closet. Quickly bolting the closet door, she called to her father, and placing a rifle in his hands, bade him shoot should his partner attempt to escape; and then mounting her horse, galloped after the Sheriff. Luckily she lost no time in finding her guardian and his men, for, in the meanwhile, Canby had stealthily re-entered, overpowered her father, and, releasing Barton, had put the old man in his place and started to flee when Nona and the men rode up to quickly release Willoby, relieve the conspirators of their stolen property, handcuff them and lead them away.
