The Lure of Gold (1910)

Dick Bennett has decided to seek his fortune in California, and, accompanied by his chum, Frank, calls to bid his fiancée good-bye. She is the daughter of Frank's employer, who is the president of a bank. He and Frank leave the room, permitting the lovers to indulge in an affectionate farewell. Grace calls frequently at her father's office, and Frank falls in love with her. One day, while alone with her, he shows her some Kodak pictures of Dick, but she does not evince much interest, as she reciprocates Frank's love, Grace looks so charming that Frank cannot resist the temptation of kissing her. She appears wounded and shocked at first, but in answer to Frank's profuse apologies she turns her cheek to him again and admits her love. Her father enters at this moment, and in his anger discharges Frank, who goes west and joins Dick. After untold hardships the boys find a gold mine, from which they extract many nuggets. They start back to civilization, become lost and suffer terrible privations. Almost dying of thirst, they are compelled to abandon the gold and stagger on. At night Frank falls asleep, and Dick, whose mind has already begun to give way, starts back for the hiding place of the treasure. The next day Frank is found by a band of prospectors and they rescue Dick, who has completely lost his reason. After convincing himself that there is no hope for his recovery, Frank marries Grace.
