Government Rations (1910)

Three Mexicans force an entrance to the storehouse at Fort Sam Houston, stealing some of the provisions. Sergeant Miles, making his rounds, discovers the theft and at once notifies Colonel Newton, the commandant of the fort. The Colonel suspects the Indians on the reservation of having committed the robbery and vows to find the guilty ones. The next day, Red Cloud, Chief of the Indians, comes to the fort to procure rations for his tribe. Colonel Newton tells him of the robbery and that he suspects the Indians. The Colonel then gives orders that no rations are to be given to the Indians until the guilty ones are given up. Red Cloud denounces the Colonel's accusation as a lie, goes back to his tribe and tells them why they have not received their rations. Calling a "council of war," they decide to go peacefully to the Colonel and implore him to give them enough food for the women and children of the tribe, who are starving. The Colonel, growing angry, refuses to listen to their idea and orders them to leave the fort. The Indians then resort to drastic measures, attack the storehouse, killing the guards, and secure the rations, of which they have been unjustly deprived. The Colonel, seeing that the Indians are on the warpath, orders out a detachment of soldiers. A pitched battle follows. Just as the battle is at its height, two scouts bring in the three having Mexicans, having found them in the mountains with the provisions in their possession. The Colonel, realizing his awful mistake, waves a flag of truce, apologizes to the Indians for his terrible treatment of them. The "pipe of peace" is then smoked and pleasant feelings resumed.
