The Red Cross Heroine (1909)

Two chums are seated, chatting, when Joe goes into the house. While he is absent, Mae, his sweetheart, enters, but is informed by Jim that Joe is not around. She accepts his escort home. Jim returns and be and Joe resume their conversation, which, however, is interrupted by a note from Mae. When Joe discovers that Jim deceived him, they argue and part bad friends. Mae comes to assure Joe of her love, when he is summoned to war. Joe is next seen in uniform at a tent. In the lieutenant, he recognizes his former chum Jim, who will not acknowledge an acquaintance with Joe. The day's commanding officer is Jim. The mail bag is brought to him and he sees among the letters one for Joe, written by Mae. This he opens and finds she has become a Red Cross nurse. His hatred of Joe increases tenfold, and he orders that Joe come before him. Jim demands that he do the cleaning of the tent. While Joe is performing this duty, Jim succeeds in putting some government papers in Joe's coat pocket. Joe finishes and departs. The commanding officer returns and asks for papers, which cannot be found. Jim reports that Joe was in the tent. He is called in, searched, and when the papers are found, arrested. Shortly after Jim is wounded in a skirmish, and he is fortunate enough to be nursed by Mae. He is lying on a cot, when word is brought that Joe is to be shot at sunset. His dying deed is to write a confession, which Mae takes, and mounting a soldier's horse, rides to save her sweetheart. Joe is standing blindfolded, with all guns aimed at him, when Mae enters with papers, which the commanding officer reads, and releases Joe. Mae and he then fondly embrace.
