The Idol of Fate (1915)
Elaine Keith is a millionaire's daughter, and Billie Gibson is a young society man. Fate is kind and Billie is accepted by the girl he loves. However, the threads of Fate become tangled, and Billie is a victim of many evil omens. The real trouble begins when Billie aids a mysterious young girl to catch a train. He gets into the power of the police, then continues to suffer a series of mishaps, not the least of which is the chilly treatment accorded him by Elaine, his intended. Billie at last decides to end it all by flopping into the lake, but is disgusted to find the water only up to his waist, and comes up with a diamond necklace. He finds gold nuggets in a pile of dirt, makes a balloon ascension, comes back to earth and encounters the mysterious girl, who finally explains to Elaine how Billie got arrested on her account. After that, the thread of Fate runs smoothly on.
