The Downward Path (1914)

Warren Bliss, the son of millionaire Henry Bliss, is so reckless that his father refuses to give him any more money beyond an allowance. Warren breaks into his father's desk, gets the combination to his father's safe, and steals money. Bob Norris, also known as The Rattler, sees Warren take the combination and put it in his pocket. Norris follows Warren to a café. Norris then has his daughter Olga attempt to get the combination from Warren. Olga meets Felix Kirk, an ex-convict, who has sworn to go straight and who wants to marry her. Olga agrees, but only after she has completed her last job for her father. Olga gets the combination from Warren and the next evening her father robs the safe. Henry and Warren return home, and Norris is trapped. Henry discovers Warren has also taken money, and Warren kills his father during a violent struggle. Norris, who has witnessed the scene, escapes, but Warren shoots him in the leg. Warren calls the police and tells them that his father was killed by a burglar they caught robbing the safe. The next day, Olga calls Felix, and, with her father, persuades him to fence the jewels that Norris had stolen. When the fence is raided, Felix is arrested for the murder of Henry Bliss. Norris, however, gives himself up and confesses to the robbery. Warren confesses to the murder.
