The Tip of the Dark Continent: Cape Town, South Africa and Its Vicinity (1914)

To readers familiar with Kaffir troubles in South Africa in the early nineteenth century, the Boer rebellion of 1815, the discovery of diamonds in 1867, and the Boer War of a few years ago, this picture will recall memories of what they have read authentically, and have pictured in their minds' eye only. Cape Town is seen panoramically, and a splendid view of Table Mountain is given. How thriving the town is is proved by a vista of Adderley Street, the main thoroughfare. Cape Town ladies and female transients patronize the flower shops, when leisure does not allow them to seek the fields and suburban stretches dotted with remarkable variety and abundance of flowers. Only a pittance is asked by the florist for a bouquet of good size and exquisite blossoms. Breakers are shown at Sea Point, a twenty minutes' drive from Capetown. A view is given of the home of Cecil Rhodes, the "Father of South Africa." It is now used as the residence of the Premier of South Africa. The Cape of Good Hope seen from land and from the deck of a whaler will interest especially young students of geography.
