Just His Luck (1911)

"I'll marry the one who proves himself a hero," said Daisy Sharp toe Ed Kidder and Joe Getter, her two admirers. Determined that he would be the hero, Ed hastened to Bill Broke's room, and soon succeeded in hiring that worthy to act as a burglar at the Sharp residence that evening. Then, at the crucial moment Ed planned to appear and capture the desperate criminal, thereby winning the heart and hand of the charming, but capricious Daisy. Creeping around the house, the pair considered themselves fortunate in finding the dining room window open, little suspecting that Dip Hoosis, a real burglar, had just entered. Scarcely had Ed climbed inside, however, than be knocked over a side table, sending vases and dishes crashing to the floor; but as they turned to flee, they looked into the barrel of a revolver, for finding their actions suspicious, the policeman on the beat rapped for assistance, and then followed the unfortunate men to the window. In vain did Ed attempt to explain; the officer would hear none of it, but quickly marched them off to the station-house. In the meanwhile Dip Hoosis, having heard the crash in the dining room, decided to make his exit through a front room, and by so doing, backed straight into the arms of Joe Getter, who had remained to spend the evening with Daisy. So completely was the burglar taken by surprise, that Joe was able to disarm and hold him at bay until the other officers arrived. The general disturbance brought old Capt. Sharp from his room, and, upon learning that Joe had captured a really desperate character, he gladly handed the "hero" the laughing and happy Daisy.
