
Tobacco Industry (1914)
First we see the gathering of the leaf at the large plantation. This is mainly done by men. The sorting is done by girls. The leaves are strung on rails and taken to the drying rooms. Next the stripping of fiber and stalks from the leaves, after which they are twisted into ropes, in which shape the tobacco is ready for shipment to the markets. All of the work is done by the West Indian negroes. The old women are incessant smokers and favor the short clay pipe.All Releases
