The Red Light (1910)
A Russian spy is taking photographs of Japanese fortifications, and is observed and followed by soldiers. By a ruse he throws them off his track, and makes his way to the Russian embassy, where he offers his secret, undeveloped photographs for sale. The bargain is made, but overheard by Count Tokohama, a Japanese officer, who is in love with the Governor's daughter. The spy makes his way to the Governor's residence, followed by the Japanese officer. They meet in the grounds, and a sensational struggle ends in the spy shooting the Count, and proceeding on his way. The wounded Count crawls to the house, climbs a balcony, and in a fainting condition is discovered by the Governor's daughter, who assists him into the room. Footsteps are heard, and they have just time to conceal themselves as they spy and Governor enter the room. They draw the curtains, extinguish the lights, and proceed to develop the photographs. The Count, in the darkness, secures the photographs and escapes, thus thwarting the spy. War is declared between the two countries, and the Count, before leaving Russia, wishes to see the Governor's daughter. She meets him, but declares she loves her country more than she loves him. He leaves disconsolately, and we next find him in the midst of a battle, where he is wounded. Brought into a Russian hospital, he is tended by his sweetheart, and dies in her arms.
