A Wilful Colleen's Way (1913)

In all County Galway there was none could stand against Terence O'Flynn whether it was in running, in wrestling or in throwing the great stone. Straight he was, and strong and wurra but it was the cold bold eyes he had when danger came in his way, but Terence came to his end through a woman. Eileen O'Moore was her name. It was Terence held first place in her heart. For his part Terence loved the little shoes of her more than all the world. The squire first caused trouble between them. When Terence learned that the squire was hanging about Eileen, he spoke bitterly to her. And then, on that very day, she danced with the squire on the green, and neither eye nor ear had she for poor Terence. Terence went out with the fishing fleet. So soon as he was gone, Eileen was sorry and went to the little church to pray he might come back. Terence came back to Eileen. He came drifting on the top of the big waves with a broken oar in his hands and seaweed in his eyes. They buried him on the beach where his body landed, and no kind word was spoken that day to Eileen O'Moore.
