Conductor Kate (1916)

When her husband, a conductor, comes home considerably "under the weather" and unable to go to work, Kate, about twice his size, hands him a good beating, and after donning his coat and hat, starts off to take his place. The inspector objects to her running the car, but a large size fist overrules his objections and with two pulls at the bell rope, she starts off for a day's work. A large, important-looking individual, contentedly smoking a quarter cigar, refuses to heed her request that he "clinch the rope," and finds himself nicely bruised up and minus the cigar in jig time. When an old woman and her child enter the car and none of the "gentlemen" offers her his seat, Kate once more takes matters into her own hands and gently removes one of the men. Now that she has established herself as the boss of the car she has no further trouble until three or four "roughnecks" enter and refuse to pay their fares. A real scrap ensues, making the others look like mere skirmishes, and this time Kate's job is not so easy for the odds are too great against her, but hubby, sobered up a bit, comes to her assistance just in time, and saves the day.
