Far from home in another mountain district, the truth breaks on the self-willed, ignorant girl. The woman agrees to keep her secret concerning the runaway with the cattleman. A love affair springs up between them. Some time later the young surveyor marries the girl and is called some distance away to the very mountain district from which the girl came to survey for a certain tunnel. He leaves a note behind explaining his mission. His wife realizes he will meet her sister and will perhaps learn something of her past life. The woman comforts her, hears her story, sees the miniature, and realizes the girl is her daughter. The girl decides to face the truth and writes a letter with her mother to the husband, telling him to find the sister and bring her back with him. The letter arrives just as the husband is about to return after the survey. He has met the sister and wronged her. When she comes to him, he puts her off and shows her the letter and a picture of her sister and her mother. She realizes the impossibility of marriage; her sister is the wife of the man.
