Separating from Sarah (1916)

Tom Dilley had induced Sarah, when very young to marry him and go west. After many hardships they reached their destination. Shortly after Tom was taken down with fever. Sarah nursed him back to health with one hand, while with the other she took in washing. Through her faithful efforts Tom recovers, and starting out with hardly a penny the two pull together and after thirty years save a small fortune. Tom builds a house for Sarah. Then one day Tom catches the hired man kissing his wife. Without asking an explanation he obtains a divorce. Sarah refuses to leave her house declaring she is entitled to half the property they have accumulated. She draws a chalk line through the center of the house. She lives on one side and Tom on the other. Things go on in this manner for several weeks the two not even speaking. Finally the situation getting the best of Tom, he goes to his attorney to ask advice. His attorney tells him to go immediately and ask Sarah to explain her conduct toward the hired man. He does as advised, and Sarah tells her reason. Their life of toil was getting monotonous. She craved romance, and decided to try just one kiss, although it nearly made her ill. Tom asks her forgiveness and says no divorce in the world could again separate them.
