Luella's Love Story (1913)

To her mother's great sorrow, Luella has grown to be an old maid. She has never had a lover. The mother, old and ill, is not willing to die and leave her alone. Luella, realizing her mother's illness to be serious, plans to make her last days happy. She goes to another village, visits her cousin Jane to further a plan which she has concocted. She writes her mother that she has finally found a man of her choice and is going to be married. The mother is overjoyed at the news, but Hank, who is Luella's only neighbor, and who loves Luella, although unconscious of it until he reads of her approaching marriage, is astonished at the news and becomes sullen. He writes Luella, telling her she ought to be ashamed of herself to "carry on" with a city fellow instead of being home with her sick mother, but Luella remains at her cousin's and keeps up the deception. When Luella returns home, her mother dies happy, believing Luella will wed, but the truth is found out by Hank. Luella confesses that there has been no man; she only wrote her mother of her marriage in order to make her last days happy. Hank, realizes what a fine woman she is, proposes, is accepted, and Luella now has a life-protector.
