The Legend of Black Rock (1914)

One morning after a big storm at sea, Joe Thornton, a young fisherman, finds a half-drowned girl lying on Black Rock. He carries her home to his mother who revives her. She cannot understand a word of English, but keeps repeating over and over her own name in the Spanish tongue, "Carmelita." Thornton teaches her to speak as he does, growing every day fonder of her, but thinking of her always as a charming child, a younger sister. Meanwhile, Thornton has been engaged to Mona, who presently returns to the fishing village. Carmelita follows the lovers to their rendezvous, and in a fit of insane jealousy, tries to stab the American girl. Thornton saves his sweetheart and deals sternly with Carmelita, by no means realizing the depth of her passion for him. On their wedding night the young fisherman and his bride take ship for San Francisco. A lonely figure on Black Rock watches the vessel out of sight. The next morning the Spanish girl has disappeared.
