The Buried Man of Tebessa (1910)

Aroun, a sheikh, is in love with the daughter of a rival sheikh. The affection of the former is reciprocated. The rivalry prevents open meetings, so messages are sent to arrange a rendezvous. One from the lover falls into the father's hands, the messenger being bastinadoed until he discloses the identity of the sender. The savage sheikh goes into a cavern in the desert; then calling his forces together, raids the camp of Aroun, and is successful in capturing the man who has dared to meet his daughter in secret, causes a hole to be dug in the sand and buries Aroun up to his neck. The messenger, meanwhile, notwithstanding his injuries, tracks the girl, rescues her, and finally the pair reach poor Aroun and dig him out. But his treatment has been too severe, and he dies in his sweetheart's arms, to be followed almost immediately by the girl into the land of shadows.
