The Yellow Streak (1913)

Hearing from the bank that he has overdrawn his account by $5000, John Matthews speculates with what little money he can command, hoping to recoup his losses. He loses everything and goes home to his wife to break the bad news and suggests that she mortgage the house and let him have the money to recoup his losses. Again he loses everything and is obliged to confess to his wife that he has violated her trust in him. That afternoon, Mrs. Jackson, a neighbor, comes over and hands John several thousand dollars and asks him to invest it for her. He puts the money in his safe and leaves the house to return to his office. From there he telephones home to say that he will not be home that night. He then buys a mask and waits around in the town until about midnight, when he goes to his house and breaks in through a window. Going to the safe he opens it and takes out the money that he had deposited there earlier in the day, thinking to get away with it and claim that a burglar had stolen it during his absence from the city. His wife hears a noise below and descends the stairs to investigate. She fears that the burglar may be her husband, but nonetheless shoots at the figure she sees in the darkness. The bullet enters Matthews' heart and he falls lifeless. Mrs. Matthews is not surprised when she finds that she has shot her husband and thinks it for the best; he is better dead than living a life of dishonor. She throws away his mask and drops the revolver by his side. She calls the police and explains that she heard revolver shots and went down to discover that her husband had been killed. The next day the coroner's jury brings in a verdict that John Matthews met his death at the hands of an unknown assassin who was bent on robbing his house.
