The Widow (1914)

A young widow finds recovering from her grief impossible, and in desperation she decides to move to a small place where she knows nobody and can escape the painful associations which constantly reopen the wound of grief. Her faithful maid Elsa accompanies her and they carry out their plan. The widow refuses to receive anyone, and to Elsa's alarm she succumbs to melancholy. The mystery attaching to the life of the widow arouses the gossips; in desperation, Elsa asks the minister to come in and see her mistress one day as he is passing. He rouses the despondent woman by pointing out to her the beauty of the service. She plans a children's hospital and becomes the good angel of the village, forgetting herself in others' misery. Seeing many men visit her home--an architect, a lawyer, and even the minister--stirs up the gossips' anger and they decide to make her quit the neighborhood. They are confounded by the minister, who discloses her identity as the "Good Angel."
