The Daughters of Senor Lopez (1912)
The simple act of discharging a worthless laborer has marked influence on the destinies of Spanish merchant Senor Lopez's two daughters. According to the custom of their people, elder daughter Madeline is afforded lenient privileges over her younger sister Inez, and their father ordered that Madeline should be the first to marry. Madeline frequently visits her father's store; during one of these visits she meets Senor Trevino. On the same day, Inez visits the store wanting something from her father, who calls her to account for appearing in public, which is against the custom of their people. She also meets Senor Trevino, who immediately becomes infatuated with her beauty and escorts her to her home. Senor Trevino, finding courting the younger daughter impossible, writes her a letter and sends it by messenger: "Senorita Lopez: May I call for you at 8 to stroll in the moonlight? Humbly, Gustave Trevino." When evening comes she goes to meet him, but is stopped by her father and Madeline. She shows them the letter and Madeline suggests to her father that she herself pretend to be the message's recipient and go meet Senor Trevino. The father readily accedes, rebukes Inez, and sends her back to the house. Madeline goes to keep the tryst and carries the deception so well that the young man is forced to show her every courtesy, believing that she actually received his note. At the Lopez home Inez awakens to her love for the Senor and becomes rebellious of the restrictions placed upon her and plans to run away. She leaves a note for her father, telling him that it is useless for him to seek her and hurries from the house, observed by discharged laborer Jose Carillo. Seeking an opportunity for revenge, Jose follows her. Out in the open country, he accosts her, seizes her, and drags her down the steps of an old ruin, planing to hold her for ransom. Meanwhile, the father has found the note and hurries to find Madeline and shows the note to her and the young Senor. Trevino cannot conceal his concern and tells the father that he will find her at any cost. Senor Lopez notifies his laborers of his daughter Inez's disappearance and they all join in the search. Trevino rushes about in the open country calling her name, and as he approaches the ruins, he hears a faint answer. He rushes down the steps and attacks her captor. The laborer is strong and wiry and it is not until assistance comes that they are able to overcome the miscreant. Trevino leads Inez back to her father, who is so delighted at seeing her again that he readily gives his consent to her marriage to young Senor Trevino.
