The Conflict (1911)

Queen of the demi-monde, Cynthia is madly infatuated with Rogers, an unprincipled scoundrel, who, secure in his dominance over her, openly makes love to other women in her presence. In a moment of desperation, her womanhood coming to the fore, she calls on Father Sullivan, the good priest at the monastery, who soothes her hysteria and tries to show her the path of rectitude. Jackson pursues his prey into the very walls of the monastery, and triumphantly brings Cynthia back with him. Disheartened, the priest is inclined to let her go her way, but a vision of the Savior rise before him, holding out a saving hand to Mary Magdalene, kneeling at his feet. Filled with holy awe, the priest enters the gilded den of vice and calls on Cynthia. Jackson resents the priest's efforts, and commands the girl to stay while the priest with inspired eloquence pleads with her to renounce her wicked life. Jackson, in a rage, strikes the priest in the face and tearing the cross from his hand, dashes it to the floor. The terrible sacrilegious act breaks the spell Jackson has held over the girl, and she turns from him in horror and revulsion. Even his own companions stand aghast for a moment, and then turn upon Jackson, ejecting him and reverently escorting the priest and Cynthia from the room. Straight to the monastery the girl turns her steps, and falling upon her knees at the altar prays for forgiveness. Jackson, calling again at the monastery finds her in a nun's garb and his efforts to break her determination to lead a holy life are without avail. Hardened as he is, a flush of shame mounts his cheeks as he gazes at the sweet-faced nuns and pious priest, and he slinks away as they drop to their knees and commune with God.
