The Ancient Order of Good Fellows (1913)

Detailed to accompany several clubmen known as The Good Fellows upon their Christmas rounds, patrolman Jerry Monroe is impressed with the results of the happiness brought into the dreary lives of the tenement children and resolves to become and remain a Good Fellow throughout the year. He becomes interested in Alice, one of the tenement children, who lives alone with her father. He is threatened with dismissal, but on account of his previous record, is given until Christmas to retrieve himself with some deed of valor. Upon the last day of grace, Christmas Eve, Jerry has accomplished no deed of valor, so goes to his chief to relinquish his star and say goodbye. He is given a photograph and description of a counterfeiter and kidnapper wanted by the police. With that proposition, the chief states that should he capture this man, he will be reinstated in the force. Christmas dawns a miserable blue day for Jerry, but he determines to deliver the gifts he has bought and starts out upon his rounds. He discovers Alice in her tenement home with her father, but through a trivial incident, Jerry discovers the father to be Erickson, the counterfeiter. As he tries to arrest him, the lamp is thrown over and room catches on fire. Jerry handcuffs Erickson, rescues Alice from the fire, and returns to the burning building for his prisoner, who has made a rush for the fire escape. The two men struggle fiercely on the fire escape; Erickson misses his footing and is hurled to his death. Jerry is reinstated, having answered the requirements of the provision made in his behalf.
