Forgotten Women (1913)
It was during a wild night of dissipation by the reveler that the derelict, drifting down the street begging, approaches him. The reveler refuses him money, but insists that he go into the banquet hall and have a drink. The derelict is dragged up to the large table. His pitiable condition and the fact that he refuses to drink to furnish amusement for the congregation. One of the crowd suggests that he tell a story in payment for the repast. The derelict tells the story of his life. He is introduced as a young man, leaving his home in the country to visit a wealthy uncle in the city. Upon his arrival his uncle finds him a good position in a counting house. His fellows in the counting house teach him to drink. He neglects his mother and his people, and his course continues downward until he receives word from his home that his mother is dying and that her last wish is to see him. He rushes home, but too late. The picture of the derelict's story fades out and the banquet hall fades in. The reveler takes from his pocket a letter from his mother containing a message from his sweetheart. He realizes that what happened to the derelict is now happening to him. He thanks the story-teller for the lesson. The reveler returns to his mother and sweetheart and leaves the life of dissipation behind. The final scene shows the derelict before a saloon fingering the money given him by the reveler. He conquers the temptation and leaves the old life behind.
