Tai-Oh was favored by the tribe as their next leader. Now Ko-id-Deh had long since sought to take his place. Thus Tai-Oh, as one sleeping, drifted down the dark waters of the river in his fast-filling canoe. But he returned and Ko-id-Deh slept with his fathers, the vengeance of Tai-Oh complete. Then Tai-Oh went back to the maid, who had taught him the way of peace.
