When Three Is a Crowd (1915)
With the pick of the girls, Neal chooses little brunette Billie who, unfortunately, is engaged to Lord Herbie Hind. At a dance, Neal, in order to escape the attentions of the girls, takes refuge in the conservatory and there meets Billie. Lord Herbie leaves Billie in Neal's charge while he dances with another girl. Neal makes violent love to Billie, who likes it, and encourages him slightly, though she is careful to tell him that she is engaged. Shortly afterward, Lord Herbie's friends give a stag supper in commemoration of his coming marriage. Neal is among those present and indulges unwisely in strong drinks. The toastmaster comments Lord Herbie on his decision and says it is the duty of every American to take unto himself a wife. Neal, being slightly intoxicated, takes this advice to include himself and sets out to the house of one of his girlfriends. It is a little bit late for a call, but when she learns that Neal has come to propose she hurried to meet him. At his proposal they plan next day to marry. Leaving Jane's house, Neal goes to the house of another girlfriend, Bess, and, having met her mother, tells her that he has come to propose to Bess. The mother makes record time in waking her daughter and sending her down to accept the proposal. Neal leaves after making preparations for the marriage next day. In the morning he has a sore head. He receives an early call from Jane, asking him what time he will be over to meet the preacher; he does not remember his actions of the night before, when she tells him they are engaged to be married that day. Bess comes and tells him of his proposal. He almost has heart failure, and in trying to forget his troubles wanders into Billie's house. He tells her his troubles. She is all attired for her marriage with Lord Herbie and sympathizes with Neal in his distressful position. Sympathy leads to love and they forget everyone but each other. Neal tells her the only way out of his troubles would be for her to marry him and they decide on a quick wedding. Of course, the other girls are disappointed and Lord Herbie is heartbroken.
