The Honor System (1913)

Richard Strong tarries at the bedside of his sick child and is late in arriving at the factory where he is employed. The foreman discharges him and high words ensue. During the quarrel the foreman assaults Strong, who to defend himself throws his assailant to the floor. The foreman is killed by the fall and Strong, found guilty, is sentenced to ten years in state's prison. Surrounded by vicious associates and bullied by cruel guards. Strong changes from a kind and considerate man to a surly brute. The series of punishments he receives only develops his lodged hate toward mankind and he is placed in solitary confinement. The new warden takes charge of the prison and is told that Strong is the most vicious character in the institution. He inaugurates the Honor System and directs particular efforts toward the reformation of Strong. It is some time before the hardened man can appreciate the warden's motive and not until the suits of stripes and the lock step are abolished does he fully understand that the new measures are the result of kindness. One day the prisoner receives word that his wife is dying and the warden grants him permission to visit her for ten days. Strong does not betray his trust and returns to the prison at the appointed time, his wife having gained strength. Some time later a crazed convict makes a vicious attack on the warden and Strong saves the official's life. The grateful warden advises the Board of Pardons fully regarding the man's regeneration and, given his liberty, Strong returns to his wife and child and begins life anew,
