The Bolted Door (1911)

Elsa and Jack, both of humble means, became engaged. Learning of a chance to better his conditions in a distant city Jack, who is ambitious to make an attractive home for Elsa, tells her of his opportunity and bids her good-bye for a short while. Six months go by and we find Jack still hustling but not yet in a position to make Elsa his wife. In the meantime Jack visits his married sister and makes the acquaintance of her little baby girl Edith. As time goes on Elsa tires of waiting for Jack to become sufficiently prosperous and to name the day for their wedding and decides to marry a wealthy patron of the place where she is employed. A few months later Jack's sister dies, leaving to his care Baby Edith, who proves a solace to Jack's wounded heart. Four years later Elsa and Jack meet as guests in the same hotel. These four years have not been happy ones for Elsa and when she meets Jack the old love returns, but Jack, remembering she discarded him on account of his lack of money, refuses to be friends and bolts the door of his heart against her.
