Cupid's Close Shave (1914)

Billings is the only barber in a small town. He hires Sudds as an assistant. Without any delay Sudds and Mamie, Billings' daughter, fall in love. Sudds courts her unknown to the father. When Sudds asks Billings for his daughter's hand he is discharged without ceremony. Sudds is left a little money by the death of a relative, and as a matter of revenge he decides to break Billings up in business if he continues to disfavor his suit. Sudds sets up an opposition shop across the road from Billings. He reduces the price of a shave and Billings meets it. Honors are about even in the contest until Sudds gets a woman barber, then Billings' shop is deserted. Billings also gets a woman barber, a man-hating old maid, who would rather cut a man's throat than eat breakfast. Billings realizes that he is beaten. He puts out a white flag and goes across the street to Sudds' shop. Then he sees Sudds has all the trade. His own daughter is the drawing card.
