Justice of the Desert (1912)

Malcolm Thomson, a banker in a western city, is considered a power among his people. Among the depositors is Ted Arlington, a hard-working man. His little girl is taken sick. Ted is met by a neighbor, who tells him that the bank is closed. He rushes madly to the banking house, pushes his way through the crowd but cannot get his hand on a dollar. He is pushed aside by Thomson, who is kept under the continual surveillance of a detective. Ted draws his pistol, is arrested and through Thomson, is sent to jail. Thomson, finding himself cornered by the bank investigators, absconds. He is a defaulter. He escapes further west. Under an assumed name he becomes a general "bad man." He quarrels with another gambler and kills him, is convicted and hung by self-instituted administrators of the law. A few years later, Ted is released from prison. He, with his wife and child, start life anew, going across country in a prairie schooner. They stop one evening for the night's rest. Their little daughter, wandering a short distance away from camp, finds the bleached skull and bones of a human being. She runs to her parents and tells them of her discovery. Ted and his wife hasten to the spot, and Ted picks up the skull, while his wife picks up a watch case, with the inscription, "Malcolm Thomson," and his address. Ted's eyes glance upward and. see a dangling rope with a frayed end, telling the whole story. The man who has suffered through the villainy of the banker, laughs heartily at the justice meted out to him who showed no mercy for others. Mrs. Arlington reminds him that as God has dealt mercifully with them, so must they be merciful to others. Ted drops the skull, takes his wife's hand in his and they go back to prepare their evening meal.
