A Divided Family (1912)

Arthur Gleason is the spoiled child of his mother. His father takes him to task. The mother flies to the aid of the son. The result: the boy leaves home and the parents separate. The boy goes to sea. The father changes his name and throws himself heart and soul into his profession, the law. We see the poor mother as a housekeeper in a wealthy home of aged people, where the old man is a roué of the deepest dye. Thus is the life of Mrs. Gleason made more wretched, the attentions of this scoundrel being horribly disgusting to her. The antiquated wife of this roué becomes foolishly jealous and is blind to the fact of Mrs. Gleason's innocence. Thus, one day, when she comes upon the husband forcing his unwelcome attentions on the housekeeper, she flies into a terrible passion and attacks the woman. The result is, the poor creature defending herself against the attack, chokes the ancient dame into unconsciousness, believing she has killed her. The son returns to his old home, only to find strangers installed there. The young man has now given up the sea and joins the police force. It comes about that his mother is arrested and brought into his station. The son goes forth to find a lawyer to save his mother. Now the lawyer turns out to be his own father. The trial is gone through with. A happy reconciliation is finally brought about, and father, mother and son are again brought together.
