A Man of the People (1913)

Jim Brady is a bully and a drunkard. He leads Nell, his wife, a hard time. She often seeks refuge and sympathy at the home of the Bassets, where she is kindly received. Basset receives a letter from his brother, telling him that the former's son, recently ordained, is coming to town, and asking his help to establish him there. The young minister arrives and is welcomed. He sees Nell and promises to call upon her and see what he can do regarding her husband. Lee meets the minister and makes fun of him. He sees his wife talking to the minister and commands her to keep away from him. Jim's ill treatment continues and the minister calls upon Nell. He is ordered out by Jim, who follows him downtown, where he goads the minister to knock him down. After enduring the taunts of the cowboys, the minister agrees to fight the bully and knocks him out. Later, while a meeting is in progress, Jim fires the church and escapes, followed by the cowboys and the minister. Jim is followed and would have been lynched but for the timely interference of the minister, who saves him on the promise that he will attend services when the new church is built.
