Love and Vaccination (1916)

A young doctor and his sister arrive at a popular summer resort in quest of practice. The doctor finds things very dull. The majority of the visitors at the resort are entirely too healthy to need the services of a doctor, so he and his sister decide upon desperate measures to secure patients. Eddie, a young man, arrives at the resort, and the sister decides he will be the first victim to start her brother's reputation. Eddie admires the girl and inquires concerning her. The clerk tells him that she is a trained nurse and is staying at the hotel with her brother, who is a doctor. In order to become acquainted Eddie pretends that he is sick and makes it convenient to get sick in the girl's presence. The doctor takes the case, and determined to make something out of it, pronounces his patient suffering from smallpox. The news spreads in the resort and the doctor has his hands full. With professional visits at $5 a throw, and vaccinations extra, the doctor is soon in the way to become well fixed. The nurse, however, has all of her time taken up in caring for Eddie, and the doctor calls to his assistance Snitch, the house detective. They try to quarantine Eddie in his room, but he objects to his nurse attending other cases, and his arrival among the guests creates a new panic. Eddie decides that he has been quarantined long enough and disappears from his room. The local detectives are put on the case and soon run him down. He is brought back to the doctor's office and discovers that he has brought prosperity to the new practitioner. The doctor shows Eddie the proceeds and Eddie persuades him that as he has been the cause of his unexpected prosperity he has some claim on the girl. The doctor agrees that the family needs a hustler like Eddie and leaves him and the girl to work out their own future.
