A Life in the Balance (1915)

Farmer Brown's little daughter has a high fever. Brown calls in old Dr. Smiley who diagnoses the illness as a severe case of appendicitis, and orders an immediate operation. The farmer, noting the doctor's failing eyesight and enfeebled condition, refuses to allow him to perform it, and calls in a young doctor from the next village. The latter performs the operation successfully, and decides to move to the little hamlet, as he can make no money in his own town. The old doctor's daughter, a young widow, will have nothing to do with him, until her little child accidentally receives a severe burn and the young doctor's wonderful skill brings it back from the brink of the grave. Then, recognizing his true worth, she falls in love with him and they eventually marry.
