Speeding (1916)

Harry, a soda fountain clerk, takes his employer's Ford without permission and takes a girl for a joy ride. When far from home he gets fresh with the girl, and she gets out and walks home. She and a girl friend plot to have Harry take them for a ride. He does. While some distance out of town they find an excuse to get Harry out of the Ford and drive away, leaving Harry to walk it. The girl then picks up Harry's rival and takes him in the Ford. While speeding through the town a constable takes the number of the car. Harry finds the Ford stalled on the roadside, takes a rope from the seats and pulls the car home. On the way home he is arrested for speeding by the constable who has taken the number of the car before. The constable enters the Ford and forces Harry to pull him to the police station. Harry is placed in a cell and the desk sergeant 'phones to the owner of the car. The girls are in the ice cream parlor as the proprietor receives the 'phone message, much to their amusement. The owner of the car, after seeing the condition of the Ford, hope Harry gets a life sentence. The picture closes with the girls serenading under the cell window, and Harry discovered between bars.
