The Angelus (1913)

Richard Bartell, a young bachelor, decides to make his permanent residence in his new country mansion. He had been there but a short time when he meets Anita, a pretty worker in the vineyards. She immediately falls in love with the handsome stranger, much to the annoyance of Jose, one of Anita's lovers. Richard returns her love and asks her to be his wife. Anita's sister and her husband object to Richard, both doubting his sincerity. They warn Anita against the wiles that rich young men use to gain the confidence of poor girls. Anita's love is too strong to be shaken, and when Richard asks her to marry him, she gladly consents. Richard sends Anita a note, asking her to come to his home and there they will go to church and be married. This note falls into the sister's hands after Anita has left the house. Believing Richard is using some trickery with Anita, the sister goes to his home, endeavoring to save her sister. She is seen entering the house by Jose, who later meets the husband and informs him of his wife's being in the rich man's home. Anita is hurt while crossing a rocky hill and lies unconscious at the bottom. The sister, after forcing her way into Richard's home, finds that Anita has not arrived. She decides to wait for her, much to the discomfiture of Richard, who has shown some worry at Anita's delay. The husband, not realizing the wife's real purpose in coming to the house, when he finds her alone with Richard, immediately draws the conclusion that she is unfaithful to him. In spite of the wife's pleading, the husband refuses to have anything more to do with her. Richard offers an explanation, to no avail. Anita, whose injured ankle has prevented her from walking, is picked up by a couple of vineyard workers and carried home. The wife leaves Richard's home in despair, knowing that it would be useless to try to reason with her husband. She becomes frantic and loses all control of herself, seeks to find consolation in death, and as she is about to hurl herself from the cliff, the tolling of the Angelus bell recalls her to her senses. The husband, who has learned from Anita the true state of affairs, goes in search of his wife and finds her in deep prayer on the edge of the cliff. The husband begs forgiveness for his hasty judgment. The wife, glad that all has turned out well, willingly returns home with him. Later Richard is sent for and both sister and brother, knowing the sincerity in his love for Anita, give their consent to the marriage.
