Tubby Turns the Tables (1916)

Long out of a job, Tubby, short and fat, but very active, is delighted to be given a job at a vacuum cleaning office. The manager gives him a portable vacuum outfit and tells him to go to the address on a card and "clean up." The machine is a very powerful one and Tubby nearly "cleans out" the manager's office when he accidentally turns the lever. About this time two crooks, having read of a wealthy banker's intention to distribute his fortune to charitable organizations, decide to get in on the "graft." Disguised as philanthropists, they call on the banker, who is just about to hand over the money when Tubby, who has been sent to that address, arrives with his double-action vacuum cleaner. Accidentally turning the lever, the machine pulls off the disguises of the crooks at the same time attracting the huge pile of money lying on the table. The crooks leap for the table just as the last bill flies through the window into the next office, where the machine is, and then hold up the banker. They see Tubby and the girl making off with the bag which holds the money, and one of them takes a shot at him, smashing the pipe in his mouth, and in retaliation Tubby hurls a milk bottle which the crook ducks and it knocks the banker out cold. The vacuum cleaner attracts the pistol and Tubby tries his marksmanship, and succeeds in smashing the telephone receiver. Then, while one crook pursues Tubby through the offices up to the roof and over the tops of several office buildings, the other pursues the girl, who jumps into the vault and slams the door. Tubby and the first crook leap from the roof of the building, landing in the midst of an auto load of cops summoned by the resuscitated banker. The other crook applies dynamite to the safe and touches it off. The first crook is jailed and Tubby arrives at the office just as the safe explodes. The girl survives and hands back the money to the banker, while the second crook is pulled out more dead than alive from underneath the huge form of Tubby.
