Heartbroken Shep (1913)

Little Runa befriends a dog, Shep, and they become great chums. Runa's parents look upon the relationship with amusement. They don't seem greatly concerned about what their daughter does, tending to leave her to her nurse. One day the parents go away, and after the nurse puts Runa to bed she goes downstairs and carries on a flirtation with the tinsmith who is working on the roof. The tinsmith gets more interested in the nurse than in his work and comes down and he and the nurse go for a walk, the tinsmith unaware that he spilled some live coals from his firepot before he left the roof. Shep, sleeping in the yard, discovers the smoke, runs to the firehouse, leads the firemen back, and guides them into Runa's room, but by some accident he gets shut into the house. He tries vainly to get out and finally succeeds, by way of a ladder, to get to the window and into Runa's room and he tries to drag her out of danger. As Runa is carried from the blazing house her parents arrive. Amazed to see the house in flames, they run to ascertain Runa's safety. This having been satisfactorily accomplished, their attention is attracted to Shep. They call him, but he does not respond. Runa calls and Shep jumps from the window. When he reaches the ground he is fatally hurt--but dies a hero.
